I called up the 1K desk and the lady was less than helpful - she said there was no Singapore Airlines booking reference code and no SQ E-ticket number on the itinerary. I would really like to be able to choose my seats for this flight beforehand and I figure there has to be a way.

The ticket number is the same for the itinerary. You can call up SQ to choose seats for F/C booking, economy class can only indicate preference with seats assigned 48 hours prior to check in.
