That's what they want you to believe.

Single ticket Penn Station to EWR Including Airtrain - $15

Single ticket NY Penn to Elizabeth - $6.75
Airtrain Ticket - $5.50

So while it's no longer a $5 savings (the ticket to Elizabeth use to be $5.50 till the recent fare increase) it's still less then buying the combination ticket
