I think the issue is more that the Costco rate that everyone is using is a summer promotional rate. According to Chrissi, "when it is a promotional CostCo rate then the certificates do not apply."
The AAA breakfast and discount rates are standard AAA offers, as far as I'm aware. You shouldn't have any problems using the certificates with the AAA breakfast rate. I've used the certs w/ AAA breakfast rate at several hotels and have had no problems.
