Hotels can individually determine what room types are available for awards. Some hotels--intentionally or unintentionally--allow at least some suites and upgraded rooms into the mix. At others, you just have the basic King or Queen-Queen room available for award nights. In any case, as long as those pre-set room types are still being sold, then you can book it on an award as long as you are within the allowed advance booking window.
I was wondering - I just booked a 'Parlor Suite' at a Comfort Suites which is usually a $40-50 rate boost on points.
