It was explained (by the flight crew on a recent flight) to me the shoulder strap is in place because the 747 is so heavy, that if there was an impact, this shoulder strap is necessary to keep us from being violently thrown from our seats.

As far as I'm concerned, if there's an impact that strong, does it really matter?
