This is strange. It's totally illogical. Not everyone who travels to HK is going to have an HKID. (I am the same situation as Daniel, born in Canada so no HKID) And they said it was a policy? What!? It's none of their ______ (insert adjective here) business whether or not I have an HKID if I'm carrying a valid Canadian passport. I would just say I didn't have one, if they asked. They are not immigration officers.
