Call and put yourself on the waitlist. They'll ask for a credit card # now - but won't charge you or take the miles unless the upgrade clears so there is really nothing to lose.
As for the chances of it clearing, you are correct that you'll be behind AA elites in the waitlist but it certainly won't clear if you aren't even on the list.
