I just returned from Alaska; my flight from ANC landed at DFW this morning at 6:00. We did three cruises on our trip and used Major Marine for each cruise. We booked in person and received a 20% discount.
On May 27, we took Major Marine's cruise from Whittier; the cost was $97 - an amount considerably less than Phillips 26 Glacier Cruise but we skipped the optional meal. We travelled to two glaciers and had amazing calving at Blackstone Glacier (actually some of the best calving that I have seen) and negligible calving at the other glacier. We also saw mountain goats (a nanny and a kid), sea otters, fur seals, and lots of birds. We were extremely fortunate because the weather that day was absolutely gorgeous - warm and sunny.
On May 28, we took Major Marine's five-hour wildlife cruise from Seward; the cost was around $50 and we again skipped the optional meal. We saw mountain goats, sea otters, bald eagles, Dall porpoises, Stellar sea lions, and lots of birds. We were extremely lucky again in that it was a gorgeous day.
On May 29, we took Major Marine's seven and one-half hour National Park cruise; we paid around $100 each and skipped the optional meal. We visited Holgate Glacier but saw very little calving. We did see two humpback whales (at a distance - I prefer to see them in Maui when they come right up to the boat), two different pods of orcas, Dall porpoises, sea otters, mountain goats, eagles, Stellar sea lions, puffins, and lots of birds. They also offer a six hour National Park cruise on a catamaran that follows the same route but travels faster. We opted for the slower boat so that we would have more opportunities for wildlife viewing.
