Known Co.com or System Bug which prevents check in?

I am a Plat member traveling with a friend on the same itinerary LAX-EWR. On waiting list for a possible upgrade for both of us roundtrip. 24 hours in advance of flight, I received an email stating wait list expired, but if I checked in now, I would be added back on the waitlist. I then try to check in online and receive an error message that I need to see agent for assistance at airport. I call CO technical support and I am informed that since I was still on the waitlist for the return flight, I could not check in online. I was then offered the opportunity to split the record in order to be able to try to get on the upgrade list for myself. I politely said no since I did not want to deal with EWR (even supervisors) telling me that the Plat companion still has to pay for bags like the last time I traveled with a friend. I also don't want my friend to have a lower status on the waiting list since if it is on my record, it will be as a Plat. Does anyone know if this is something they are working on correcting? Thanks.
