I personally like it the way it is now. As a Diamond, I seem to be "allowed" to book stays that are way in the future (as in 2011) without having the points currently in my account. I know I will earn them in time to use this future reservation and in some way, it actually encourages me to keep staying at Hyatt so I can earn the points so I can take that "speculative" trip.
Above all, if had to wait until I earned a FFN or had enough points in my account to book a stay I wanted, I would be quite upset if the Hyatt I wanted to book hadn't any standard rooms for me when I went to use the points or FFN/BWB. Sometimes I earn the FFN literally a week or two before the date of the "speculative" booking I made, perhaps 3 or 4 months before.
I really doubt Hyatt changes the system, especially after just doing the award category updates. If the credit card comes out and then say 6 months later, there are even more issues of this going on (holding nights) then I would expect Hyatt to react.
I think it is fair to let DIAMONDS book anyway they want., as in keep it like it is now. That is a perk of being a diamond would think. It gives you an incentive to become a diamond and stay one!! For regular and platinums, perhaps letting them hold one "maybe" reservation at a time would be fair.
