Earn an award then spend it - this should be as simple as that.
I disagree somewhat. There should be a healthy compromise.
Gold- Must have points to book
Platinum- Can reserve a Cat. 1-3 hotel without points. Must complete your earning no later than 1 month prior to check-in date.
Diamond- Can reserve a Cat. 1-5 hotel without points. Must complete your earning no later than 2 weeks prior to check-in date.
If you want to book a Cat. 6 room, when they are implemented, you must earn the points/credits beforehand. If you cancel, you lose the points/credits.
Had it not been for the BWB/AA25K promo, I probably would have never stayed at Hyatt. With the Fast Track to Diamond promo, I was allowed a glimpse into a world that I otherwise would have never seen. Because of this, Hyatt has become my go-to hotel for personal vacations and business. They gained a customer for life. However, had I not been allowed to pre-book 3 nights in Orlando, it wouldn't have made sense for me to sign up for any of the promos. I couldn't afford to spend $300+ on a mattress run that might or might not have rooms available on the nights that I needed them. It was win/win for Hyatt and me.
