It doesn't necessarily appear on the boarding pass if travelling on a non AA flight.
A friend of mine just completed the challenge when travelling with me. After reaching platinum we flew MEL-LAX on Qantas and the status did not show, LAX-ORD on an AA flight but on a QF codeshare and it didnt appear. The only flight where the status showed was on the BA flight from ORD-LHR.
For his trip on saturday on Iberia, AA have offered to fax him a letter which confirms his status which will hopefully ensure that he gets lounge access.
