If you follow the arrows you only go through US Immigration and customs, not Canadian. And I believe currently you do not have to collect your bags. If US customs decides they want to inspect them they can call them up.

If you have a really long layover you could go through Canadian immigration anyways and get access to more of the airport. Probably not a trick to pull on your first trip through though.
