I don't think its your problem as to why, it's managements responsibility to understand what happened and address the problem. I agree that it has security ramifications not only to the hotel, but to the other guests on property if the front desk is unmanned and the front door unlocked. I would think a brief call to the GM is appropriate to discuss their night service expectations and relay your experience.
