The angle for the new J seats is somewhere between 5-7 degrees. If you don't think that's much, try running up a 7-degree incline for 20-mins!
Anyway, I have sat/slept in this seat many times. Fortunately, I have only paid for it a few times. The rest were op-ups.
I personally find the seat too hard. You can find a list of reviews
here.
I've worked out the secret to getting to sleep on them though. EK business provides thin foam mattresses to use on top of the seats when you are ready to sleep, which to me is EK admitting to something along the lines of "sorry, we buggered up the seat design and when we were providing the brief to the seat manufacturer, they thought we said hard when we really said soft. Or something like that. Anyhoo, the EK staff member responsible has been sent to our remote 1-man station in Uzbekistan".
Anyway, I've flown many sectors where the crew forgot/didn't give the mattress pads out. So I just open a bin until I find them and grab 2-3.
I then drink as much Moet as possible. Then ear-plugs in. Check. Eye-shades on. Check.
Works a charm every time.
