I have dietary restrictions. When a flight only has food for purchase (which means not generally any options I can eat) is it acceptable to take a meal onboard and ask a flight attendant to heat it?

Has anyone done this? Are FAs generally happy to do it or is it not the done thing?

Obviously I could take something that didn't require heating but its a looong travel day and I'd like to have something hot if poss.
