I just used an Osprey Porter 65 for a 3 week trip through Europe. I loved it! I'm a 56-year old woman, but I was able to easily carry my bag on trains, up flights of stairs, and around airports. The hide-away backpack straps worked great. I'd zip them up when checking in for flights and on the trains. It takes less than a minute to set it up or take them down.
If you don't mind a small daypack, you can buy an Osprey Daylite daypack. It attaches to the front of the Porter via 4 D-rings.

I found the Porter 65 to fit the bill for a good price point.
