From the west coast, you invariably have to change plane on AA. SFO/LAX to JFK to Europe is what needs to be done. UAL has (or had) direct SFO to Europe flights. Personally I prefer an hour or two to stretch my legs rather than a 12 hour West Coast to Europe flight.
