At the MVPG gold lunch last year in the OC, I asked Double R if AS ever had plans to fly LAX>NYC. His every lucid answer was that AS COULD compete on the soft product for example, but could never compete on the hard product. AS can't compete on 38" of pitch vs. 55"...
Well, they could with their current fleet, but they'd have to go to a VX-style F: rip out current seats, slap in 8 Recaro recliners and there should be sufficient pitch.
The problem is that AS would either a) be creating a second fleet to do this for LAX-NYC transcons, or b) would be severely diminishing the MVP/MVPG benefit if they halved ALL the F seats fleetwide.
I'd also have to think they would have to do LAX-EWR. DL and AA would probably treat LAX-JFK as a declaration of war. Don't think AS wants to peeve BOTH of their codeshare partners by starting service on flagship routes, whereas LAX-EWR is sort of tit-for-tat on SEA-ANC.
