If I'm connecting onward, obviously a moot point. But simply getting to/from NYC from DC, I always to take Bolt Bus. $20 or so, 4 hours, mid-town Manhattan drop off/pick up, tons of trip options. Clean bus, free wifi to boot. I leave my AA loyalty at the door on this route.
Last summer, I was able to go JFK-DCA and back for around $80 r/t. Because of a cancellation on the way back, they did route me DCA-BOS-JFK so I racked up a few extra miles. However, This summer it's probably going to be impossible. Yeah, you get the miles+exp bonuses, but all the trouble getting from Manhattan to JFK and back, delays, etc.-you're probably right that atleast for this summer the best route is the comfy wifi enabled buses
