Not exactly to your question, but I'd be inclined to short check the bags, claim them in SFO, and recheck directly with CX. That's what I do. I fly five times/year between BOS and HKG roundtrip, connecting either at JFK or LAX. I've never had CX foul up bags on connection, but can't say the same for AA.
