Dorian - yes, you have to have account ACTIVITY. This can be as little as a $1 charge on an affinity credit card; car rental miles, dining miles, award redemption, etc. So, while some airlines require a flight in order to keep miles from expiring, AA only requires the additon or subtraction of as little as 1 mile - no matter the source.
