Question Complicated flight question regarding booking layover flights to save $?

Here's the deal. We are going to Albuquerque from Atlanta for a wedding in August. We would like to fly non-stop from Atlanta on Delta (currently $468 RT). However, a cheaper flight originates in Birmingham and flies to Atlanta and then to Albuquerque on Delta (same non-stop flight that we want to be on but the extra leg originating in Birmingham for $345). Same thing on the way back - the flight flies from Albuquerque to Atlanta and then back to Birmingham.

Can we book the cheaper ticket and skip the flight originating from Birmingham and just be waiting in Atlanta for departure and obviously miss the flight to Birmingham once we arrive back in Atlanta? If so, are there any repercussions or consequences?

I'm sure there is another post with this same sort of question but I really didn't know what to search for in the forum.

Many thanks - any help is appreciated.
