The answer probably depends on just what you're trying to acomplish here. As in, are you wanting to sleep overnight in the room? Or are you just looking to get into the sleeper for a few hours so as to take a shower and/or enjoy the Pacific Parlour Car for a few hours?

If the later, then do the upgrade the first day out from say Santa Barbara to Salinas.

If the former, then you'd want something after Emeryville to Klamath Falls. Of course the problem with waiting that long is two fold. One, the train could sell out. Two, you could meet a conductor who doesn't want to be bothered doing the upgrade.
