*Gold does get you into the Envoy Lounge on a same day international / transatlantic ticket... arguably the best US lounge in the system. Do make sure to go to Envoy and not a regular club... open bar / decent eats at the Envoy Lounge. The folks there are very friendly (Elizabeth at the front desk , and Barbara at the bar Thursday-Monday).
You can't access the Envoy lounge on your way back into the US as it's not an "arrivals" lounge. The last time I was there last month it opened at 1:30pm... it might change depending on seasonal flight schedules.

I was told by the lady at the desk that being *Gold gets you and a guest into the Envoy lounge (I'm assuming you also have to have an international ticket). If you simply had an Envoy ticket but was not *Gold you could not bring in a guest.
