Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but from reviews I've read either here or at Tripadvisor I'm under the impression that the village of Santa Rosa itself is nothing special and in fact is very poor. Does that sound right?
What I was getting at about Campeche was mostly based on the fact that I found the Santa Rosa a great place to chill and relax… even for 5 days. For difficult to explain reasons I found Uayamon to be more boring than relaxing. So my suggestion was if you do want to stay at Uayamon for whatever reason… try and shift more time to Campeche as it is still a nice place and you have a very interesting non-touristy town to explore at your leisure. So, for example, if I had 6 days to spend between the two I might do 3 and 3 if staying at the Santa Rosa and perhaps 5 and 1 if staying at Uayamon (certainly no more than 2 at Uayamon). BTW my wife would also echo my sentiment on this topic.
Since you will be spending a full week of down time in Celustun to me that means I’d look to spend more time at Campeche than either SR or U. In fact if I were to return to the Yucatan and was forced to stay in only Merida or Campeche… I’d pick Campeche.
Yes, the little, town of SR is ultra small and poor, although I suppose that is a relative term. It is unlikely you will spend very much time there… but there are a couple of places to buy snacks and there is a little church.
