We are taking the family to mallorca next month.. I have a few questions that would help us to decide the best choices for our stay...

It seems that the sout west of the island is more populated and perhaps more commercial, while the north and east appear to be more tranquil and family-oriented.

My question was really intended to encourage people who really know, or even locals to respond and offer some suggestions.

What we are looking for are:
Family oriented hotels or houses, preferably near the beach or at least within a short distance.
Not too far from interesting sights and places (we don't know what's interesting and not).

We don't want to be isolated in some far-off country place, but we also don't want to be deluged with thousands of crazy tourists and people endlessly trying to sell us worthless junk.

Some have told us that a "4 star" hotel in Mallorca is more like a 2-star. Is that true?
