I had a simular experience when I booked my A380 flight. Reserved 81A and B in the upperdeck, but 3 weeks before departure they canceld my seats :S This because the seats are reserved for Elite+ or paying extra

Upperdeck is a good choice, since it's a smaller cabin then downstairs. Also you'll departure the plane directly after business.
