I see this breaking even on average.
Some places (such as YVR or LAX) I fill up nearby as it's pretty convenient, some other (CLE or ORD for example) if it looks full I don't bother as I have neither time nor desire to search for a gas station when it's not on the way especially if it's a place I don't know and it's dark outside.
