You need to call to be put on the list and they will withdraw the points from your account at your time.
For B fare passengers. I believe that Plat/Gold are considered on the same level, but date of being put on the list is paramount. Thus a gold going on the list today will be above a Plat going on the list tomorrow.
I booked 3 B fares to Asia (HKG/PVG/PEK) for next Jan/Feb at 330 days out and called right away to be put on the list. Of the 6 BF segments. 3 cleared about 1 month later.
Edited to add: One good thing about the B fare is that if it does not clear, the option is to cancel for a $250 fee and get the balance charged back.
