Very good point to note. I usually buy a B-fare if the B-fare is less than or equal to the cheapest fare-plus-copay.
In that case, buying a B-fare at least gets me 150% EQM's.

But if you want to upgrade on the UA/NH metal you need to be on a B fare and pay additional miles.
Yes, another point to keep in mind. If want the upgrade on the TPE sector, then you have to buy a minimum of B-fare on UA / NH metal (no codeshares) to qualify for the Star Alliance upgrade.
