While you can avoid the checked bag fee this way, your bag still has to make it through the TSA screening first. Usually the only reason I would check a bag on most flights is if I have some item (i.e. a liquid) that I know won't make it through security. (of course this is a moot point for most of us, since most of us don't have to pay the fee anyway).
