The e-certificate will show up in your MR account. To use it you go through the booking process like you were using points, then it will present you with the option to use the e-certificate instead of points. (assuming you are looking at a compatible category hotel).
You then reserve the hotel. You have to use the e-certificate before the expiration date - which is the day you check in (not the day you check out).
If it expires say May 15, then you need to check in on May 15.

I immediately thought so, but when you book your hotel, it takes the certificate out of availability and attaches it to the reservation.
I have never tried it, but wondering if everyone is just assuming it will expire?
