Runway 6/24 is to the west of the terminal... it's end is down by the big TWA hangers. Aircraft on this runway don't cross over the terminal (it's actually closer to the end of runway 12L/R).

What would cause a MD-80 to bank out over the terminals is definately a go-around. This happens frequently at STL due to the tight spacing... I've seen it many times due to aircraft being slow on the runway at STL. I guess spacing just didn't work out. It was more impressive when I saw a B767 do this at STL.
