Welcome to FT. Based on my experience too, CO is one of the worse airlines for redeeming miles for saver awards.
You need to draw a distinction between CO rewards and CO metal. There is quite a significant difference.
CO has great routing rules and reasonable rates and is actually pretty easy to redeem with assuming you've done some homework on the inventory. But if you want to be on CO metal that's a somewhat different story.
