But I do have one question which is also presented by the original poster here. I know this thread is old, but this one was the only one I can find where this question was asked:

Next, I am flying JFK-ORD-SFO. The flight is at the evening. Is it possible to standby for a morning flight that does from JFK-SFO nonstop? Thank you.
Depends upon you individual fare rules. AA does proactively offer paxs to switch from a connection to a direct flight for $49 (they have called me at work before to offer me a direct flight). My suggestion is to call AA. Also, some GAs might allow you to standby for the direct flight but non elites are suppose to pay $50 for standby. But again, recently I saw a GA allow a pax to go on a later flight after he missed his original flight without a reprice or even a stand by fee (I was standing by the GA because the FAs wanted to halt boarding of F/J.) In fact, the pax had his cc out ready to gladly pay whatever it was to board that flight.
