Assuming you're up front, you'll be fine. AA replaced all the bins in the front half of the plane a couple years ago. The outboard bins are still larger than the inboard bins and the outboard bins will easily hold any compliant carryon bag.
Indeed, I am up front, in an A seat, so I will feel rest assured at that. Thank you. I will have a small backpack, but can put that in the foot well. It is only a 2H40 flight, so no flat bedding for me.
