I've had exactly 1 complimentary upgrade in my 200k+ in the last year, and it was for SJC-LAS after a weather delay. No operational upgrade, although I did get (voluntarily) downgraded once.
But given the wide-open upgrade policy and the large number of ways you can upgrade, I think it's a fair deal.
