I've screwed up like that. Booked a ticket (on AA) and didn't notice I had scheduled my return a day late. AA desk said "sorray - $650 to change". Options were to pay the change fee, fly home on a one way on another airline for $250, or just stay. I stayed.
We all make mistakes.
About a decade ago I was flying DL from CVG to LAX and had been bumpted to F. Midway through the boarding process a 30ish woman confronted me, saying that I was in her seat, showing me her stub. This was before pre-boarding barcode scanning. I asked to FA to check. The woman was becoming quite upset at the delay of getting her in her seat. Finally a red coat came to let her know that the ticket was for the following day. The flight was full and she did not get on.
