Great idea....

I'd ask nicely of course.... and show them what is in the bags so they can confidently answer questions about the contents...

Better all round I'd say if they can honestly answer that they "packed" the bags.. rather than saying they are carrying it for a friend which sounds like a red flag line to me!!!
