Thanks for all the replies. Just an update, it's 12am EST the night prior to my flight (T-36hrs). Called 800 number to upgrade, was given my choice of seats. CS said it's wide open, and the website allows me to book a res for 9 people.

Also the 20$ prepaid earlier for exit row was rolled into the upgrade charge. total 99 for LAX/MKE
