No, it works just fine.
I've just cleared DFW-LAX-NRT in exactly that way.
The DFW-LAX segment cleared as a requested domestic upgrade as an EXP then today the SWU cleared for LAX-NRT.
I do this a lot and the only glitch I sometimes hit is that if the SWU clears first perhaps 20% of the time I need to phone and nudge them to clear the domestic leg.
Most of the time it works perfectly
