I always request sticker upgrades for the domestic portion of int'l trips when an eVIP is waitlisted. Up until the eVIP clears the domestic upgrades show 'requested' when you look at the trip in my reservations on aa.com.
Is there something going on behind the scenes that takes you off the sticker waitlist even though it appears you're on it?
When I was a PLT and would do this, once or twice the miles/copay upgrade would clear, but after the trip stickers were also deducted for the domestic portion. AAdvantage Customer Service was always happy to put the stickers back.
