NOTE: RELATIONSHIPS APPLY WHETHER NATURAL, ADOPTIVE, STEP, IN-LAW, FOSTER, DOMESTIC PARTNER, WARD OR LEGAL GUARDIAN.
and it does appear serious illness (with medical certification) for
- SERIOUS ILLNESS OF THE PASSENGER, TRAVELING COMPANIONS OR IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBERS
can qualify for fare rule waiver

Whether or not what the OP is requesting would qualify, I do not know ... but it appears it is worth a try.
