I have always been under the impression that seat volunteers still might not be needed until the plane had finished boarding. Was the mechanical announced after the plane had boarded and the seats were all taken?
If yes, then I believe compensation should be given. I am a bit surprised that AA offered $500 and seats on a flight 2 hours later.
