Virtually every company has to make strategic decisions based on imperfect information. Some of those decisions are going to work out well, others less so. But sitting here today, you have no better information than AA as to whether a market will develop and, if so, how long that will take.
Is that a problem that other FTers are speculating. As you mention, companies make plenty of mistakers. Interesting DL changed the boarding scenario with the launch of Sky Priority. Before it even started FTers were calling out why it wouldn't work. Whoops, a month later they are changing it.
Some times the customers are closer to the market than HQ despite their reams of data. Is it hard to hear when other FTers have 'educated' speculation? I think in a number of cases it shows how much the FT community is in tune with the marketplace. ^
