I was just at Fushimi Inari a couple days back. I had been there a couple of times before, but was with people older and less fit than I am (not a spring chicken either, but we're talking people who consider walking up a set of stairs "strenuous exercise"), so only went in the first couple of legs of the path.
This time I was more free to roam and walked all the way around the mountain loop in the late afternoon. It is well worth it, very atmospheric and special. There are a number of rest stations along the way where you can sit down and have a cup of tea or a snack. Funny part is that the vending machines at the bottom of the mountain charge the usual 120 yen for a drink, and as you climb up, prices get progressively higher and at the top the same drink costs 250 yen. Market prices in action.
