I'd consider taking a look at the returning trip post-customs "re-check the bag" experience for each airport you're considering as part of your analysis.
The OP's talking about outbound SEA-XXX-LHR-ATH, with an ATH-SEA-LHR return, no? So he shouldn't have to clear customs outbound from the US BA gateway.
