Upgrade standby list/ Connecting passenger and question

While it is in the Wiki's, FAQs, etc I had never paid attention to the rule that within same elite level, connecting passengers are at the top of the list.

I was flying internationally connecting in DFW. I checked in at the AC in Chile and I was #13 on the upgrade list. In DFW, the AC lady noted that they had me as a "local"...she changed it to connecting passenger and I jumped to #1.

It makes me wonder...

1. Are passengers on domestic routes also "connecting" passengers?

2. I am flying SAN-LAX-MIA this week and there are only 3 seats left in J.
If I use OLCI, will I be automatically added to the airport upgrade standby for LAX-MIA list as a "connecting passenger"? (My connection time is 50 minutes, so by the time I arrive to the gate, boarding will have already started - no time to talk to LAX GA)

3. And, no offense to the AE (American Eagle) agents at the San Diego Commuter Airport (only AE flights from there)...but will they be knowledgeable enough to make sure I am in the waitlist as a "connecting" passenger?

Thanks,
