I'm not being an "apologist" for my company but advertising maps issued by transportation companies have been notoriously inaccurate for over a hundred years. If you ever look through an Official Guide of the Railways from as late as the 1970s, you will see railroads making their portion of the country about twice as big as the rest of the nation. At home, I have one of Continental's big route maps--the kind that airlines used to hang behind their ticket counters, which was ironic because during regulation, everyone knew where a specific airline flew. Anyway, it is a stylized hip late Sixties version of the US, and the whole country is slanted and squished. Airlines used to show all the connecting airlines from their cities on their route maps to make their systems look more far-reaching. At least, our current maps aren't that "nefarious," it's just an attempt to squeeze close cities into a readable presentation, considering the small scale of many of our maps.
